Which School Tie Does My Child Need?

Let’s face it: navigating school uniform rules can feel like sitting an exam you didn’t revise for. And when it comes to school ties, the choices can be knotty (sorry). Clip-on, elastic, 39", 45". Where do we start!?

But never fear — Ethical Schoolwear is here to unravel the mystery. We've created a quick guide to help you choose the right tie size based on your child’s age and stage.

🧸 For Primary School Children (Ages 4–11)

👶 Reception/Nursery to Year 2/P3 (Ages 4–7):

Elastic 10" School Tie (with a pre-tied Windsor knot)
These little ones are still learning to write their names and put their shoes on the right feet. Expecting them to tie a Windsor knot is frankly optimistic. This over-the-head elastic tie is a lifesaver for rushed mornings and tiny fingers.

🧒 Year 3/P4–Year 6/P7 (Ages 7–11):

Option 1: Clip-On School Tie 14" Tie (with a pre-tied Windsor knot)
If your child is still prone to wearing their jumper backwards, a clip-on tie is the dream. Pops neatly onto the shirt collar, no fiddly knotting required.

Option 2: 39" Full-Length School Tie
Feeling brave? For the more mature primary student, the 39" tie is a proper grown-up tie they can learn to knot themselves.

🎓 For Secondary School Students (Ages 11–18)

Welcome to the big leagues! Whether they’re studying for GCSEs or just perfecting the art of the slightly loose tie look, secondary schoolers are ready for the real thing.

🧑🎓 First year–sixth form (Ages 11–18):

45" Full-Length School Tie
This is the full-size, grown-up tie — smart, versatile, and suitable for all secondary ages and sizes. Whether they’re First year and still enthusiastic or Upper Sixth and pretending they don’t care, the 45" gives enough length for a decent knot (or a deliberately lopsided one).

🎨 And the Colours?

With 52 colour options across wide stripe, narrow stripe, and twin stripe styles, we’re confident we’ve got your school’s tie needs covered. If you're not sure which pattern matches your school’s uniform, check with the school office — or consult the trusted Parent WhatsApp Group (they’ll know everything, probably too much).

🌱 Bonus Points: It’s Eco-Friendly

All our ties are made with recycled plastic bottles. That means your child’s uniform isn’t just smart — it’s sustainable. Good for the planet and the playground.
